Learn to Play EVERY minor Chord, Everywhere on the Guitar
Shapes and colors make it easy to learn guitar chords. We start out by showing the Dm chord everyplace on the guitar. There are several unique shapes that create the Dm guitar chord. Check out how many different place you can finger a Dm chord. Shapes make the chord fingering easy to grab.
Pick any shape and move it around to get every minor chord
Which shape is your favorite for playing the Dm chord? Find your favorite shape and simply move it up 2 frets, now you have an Em chord. This works with any of the shapes. Now take that Em chord and slide it up one more fret. You got an Fm chord in your hands now.
The Guitar is Full of Repeating Patterns
Now choose a different Dm shape on the guitar. Maybe one on a different set of 3 strings. That’s right, it only takes 3 strings to make ANY minor chord. It’s just 3 notes. Pick a shape that’s higher up the fretboard this time. This way you have space to slide it back 2 frets. Now you have a C minor. Anyplace that is 2 frets behind Dm. Once you know the basic musical alphabet; A-G, you can move any shape around to get to any minor chord. The sharps and flats are just in between the letter names. Just remember there are no sharps or flats between E and F notes, as well as B and C notes. Just skip over one fret between all the whole letter names, A-G. Except between E and F, and between B and C, these guys are right next to each other, no fret skipping needed.
Colors of the Rainbow
You can see the Red, Yellow and Blue colors on the guitar fretboard image.
Red is the root note D, Yellow is the minor 3rd, the note F and Blue is the A note, the perfect fifth. I you don’t understand terms like minor 3rd or Perfect 5th, no worries, we will cover these in upcoming videos. If you can only remember one thing for today, focus on a shape you like. That’s where the ease and simplicity of playing comes in and the pure joy comes in.
