Major 7th chords have almost a “Heavenly” feel to them. They sound really sweet and warm. Maj7 type chords have a certain sound to them. That is really the most important thing to understand.
Emaj7 is NOT the same as E7. Close but not the same, just one note difference. They actually sound quite different.
Fun with 3 Strings
I like to play on 3 strings at a time, it makes it easy on the brain and easy on the fingers. Emaj7 has 4 notes in it. E, G#, B and D#. So I start out with just 3 notes, but them I expand to 4 and more strings to cover all the notes. If you have other musicians to play with, you might not need to play all 4 notes, 3 may be enough. Each group of 3 notes has a certain sound. That may be just the sound you are looking for.

The video shows several ways to play the Emaj7 chord. Sometimes it is written as EM7. There are few different ways this chord can be represented in musical notation.

Try playing the Yellow, light purple and blue dots shown above on the 8th and 9th frets. Then when this feels comfortable, try adding in the red dot above on the 7th fret.
