We wrote out on paper a simple chord progression in the key of E. Writing things on paper helps connect the creative part of your brain. It also allows you to see the big picture of the chord progression. Things can easily be adjusted as needed.

I had just a couple lyrical ideas to start with. Ultimate Lover and Divine Love Alchemy.
I sketched a few lyrics on paper, hit record and sang. I actually came out pretty good for a first verse and chorus. this was actually a lot of fun to record.
We easily came up with enough material for 4 more verses. We might have to trim it down.
We swapped some words around here and there and added some new lines the next day.
It was fun doing the guitar part based on just 3 strings. check out that video next. This song is a continuous work in progress. Many songs evolve over time. Sometimes they come together quickly and other times they sit on the back burner for a while, til inspirations strikes again and the song makes further progress.
Songwriting Mindset
Songwriting is a very creative process. Creativity sometimes seems like the intangible factor. How can one increase musical creativity?
- Learn more about music, especially from creative people. Never stop learning. Being around other musicians can help you in ways you don’t even know about – yet.
- Meditation – there are many forms of meditation. Even just closing your eyes for a few minutes can free the mind of clutter and allow musical ideas to come thru.
- Be playful. They call it playing music, laugh smile while you play. Try to find fun pieces of music to learn from and inspire yourself.
Try to make music a priority in your life. Play and listen and play some more. Listen to genres of music you really enjoy and try to listen intently to what instruments are used, how they are played and the feeling and vibe of the music.
